Breakfast Cereal – More Sugar Than Ice Cream

May 17th, 2009 · 5 Comments

In the late 19th century, John Kellogg founded a famous health clinic at Battle Creek, USA. He and his brother, William, invented Cornflakes. They argued over how much sugar to add to the cereal. This eventually split them up.

William went off to make a name selling various sugar-rich breakfast cereals, and John would have nothing to do with it – being convinced so much sugar was bad for health. He continued to be well known through his clinic.

Kellogg’s company continues to this day to lead the field in sugar-laden cereals. Many UK breakfast cereals contain more refined sugar per serving than Tesco’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream. The latter contains nearly 12g of refined sugar per serving, whereas cereals such as Kellogg’s Frosties, Kellogg’s Ricicles and Nestle’s Cheerios contain between 14 and 15 grammes per serving.

This is between 3 and 4 teaspoons of sugar for breakfast. C’mon diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

It’s Criminal

In an age when obesity and diabetes are reaching epidemic proportions, this is close to a crime. Especially so when advertising of these sugar-laden cereals is often targeted at young children.

In their defence, Kellogg’s said: “Research shows that those who eat breakfast are slimmer then those who do not.”

Hmmm. I’m not convinced. That doesn’t make your stuff healthy. You are beginning to sound like cigarette manufacturers.

When I was young we played outside all day in the summer and in the winter played cowboys and indians inside. I think most of the obesity problem (and all the related health problems) are directly related to the fact that kids have been living lives void of physical exersion (for the most part) for 2 or 3 generations now. Exercise has so many health benefits it’s rediculous. People literally sacrifice their kids health by sitting idly by and letting them NOT get involved in sports and NOT do chores that require physical effort and NOT insisting that they get up off their lazy butts and get things done themselves instead of doing things for them. It reminds me of Ben Franklin’s old saying “spare the rod and spoil the child.” You do your kids no favor by being easy on them because the world isn’t easy; they need to be prepared for that reality.

I agree with you totally. For my three year old his breakfast consist of whole grain cereals and fruits or eggs. I get him outside to play at least 2 hours per day and let him run lose, climbing, running, jumping, rolling…anything that gets him going. Up until a few days ago I was able to keep him hooked on kids cable channels that had no commercial, but recently he found “Sponge Bob”, that airs with commercials. He now sees many commercial about cereals with high fat, sugar, and food colorings that look so bright colorful and fun. He has began to ask me for these items and identifies them at the store. What is a mother to do? I try so hard to keep him in line but cereals produced by Kellogg and many others are just so bad. They are marketing directly to my 3 year old. I feel so frustrated and mad…the last thing I want for him is to develop diabetes like his father and grandparents. So what can we do?

Perhaps we can only try to be role models and hope it sinks in later…
