In the late 19th century, John Kellogg founded a famous health clinic at Battle Creek, USA. He and his brother, William, invented Cornflakes. They argued over how much sugar to add to the cereal. This eventually split them up.

William went off to make a name selling various sugar-rich breakfast cereals, and John would have nothing to do with it – being convinced so much sugar was bad for health. He continued to be well known through his clinic.

Sugar For Breakfast

Kellogg’s company continues to this day to lead the field in sugar-laden cereals. Many UK breakfast cereals contain more refined sugar per serving than Tesco’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream. The latter contains nearly 12g of refined sugar per serving, whereas cereals such as Kellogg’s Frosties, Kellogg’s Ricicles and Nestle’s Cheerios contain between 14 and 15 grammes per serving.

This is between 3 and 4 teaspoons of sugar for breakfast. C’mon diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

It’s Criminal

In an age when obesity and diabetes are reaching epidemic proportions, this is close to a crime. Especially so when advertising of these sugar-laden cereals is often targeted at young children.

In their defence, Kellogg’s said: “Research shows that those who eat breakfast are slimmer then those who do not.”

Hmmm. I’m not convinced. That doesn’t make your stuff healthy. You are beginning to sound like cigarette manufacturers.
