Record numbers of children are being admitted to NHS hospitals in the UK for obesity-related ailments. Kids under 18 admitted have increased by 30% in the past 5 years.

Ailments for which the children have been admitted include joint, heart, liver and breathing problems.

More and more younger children are being admitted too. In 1998, 113 children were admitted, of whom 25 were under 10. In 2008, 210 under 18 were admitted, with 29 under 10.

About a third of children are obese by the time they start secondary school.

Childhood obesity rates in the USA have increased by 300% since 1980. Today, 1 in 6 children between 6 and 19 years old are either overweight or obese.

It is estimated that 70% of overweight adolescents go on to become overweight or obese in adulthood. As obesity increases the chances of suffering a heart attack, stroke or dying early from any cause, the US health system should brace itself for an onslaught of sick fatties in the next 20-30 years.

George Foreman Grill

Did you ever wonder why a former boxer should put his name to an electric grill? Specifically, the George Foreman grill?

Well, here is some clarification:

“Grill marks provide 100% of your daily deliciousness and are high in awesome. It is therefore in your best interest to eat more grill marks.”

And I thought it was all about being healthy – now I’m beginning to understand!

Stevia Sweetener Approved

At last, Stevia has been approved by a European country – France.

Stevia has been used as a calorie-free sweetener in the Far East for centuries. However, the EU authorities in their wisdom decided to ban it. It is even awkward to get hold of in the USA – it is sold as a ‘food supplement’ rather than a sweetener.

Stevia is herbal and it is many times sweeter than sugar. I have 4-5 drops on porridge myself sometimes and that is equivalent to, probably, a couple of spoons of sugar. It is ridiculous that stevia is not currently permitted. It is much safer than apartame – which is permitted.

The sweeteners market is dominated by aspartame and sucralose. Neither are natural, and aspartame has many clouds hanging over its head concerning its negative effects on health.

Stevia has no such health concerns associated with it that I have heard.

While full EU approval for stevia is still dependent on a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority), France has taken advantage of window that allows individual member states to approve ingredients for a limited two year period.

I buy it when I am in the States. You can buy it and get it sent over if you wish. I recommend SweetLeaf brand, the ‘Clear’ type.

Some Scientists Cheat

The Alliance For Natural Health (ANH) have reported on a grey area of scientific research. They report that in many cases where clinical trials were either biased or even just wrong, the underlying intentions were not necessarily honest. Their report is based on a survey of scientists’ research carried out at The University of Edinburgh.

In the survey, 5% of scientists admitted to blatant dishonesty in their work. One third admitted manipulating data to give a false impression. A third also had observed others doing the same thing. This is science fraud.

This is very concerning, when you consider that if in the medical research field, misleading result could make the difference between a blockbuster drug or a so-so one; and could be the cause of much pain and suffering or even death.

Caffeine Linked to Alzheimer’s Treatment

US scientists have found that caffeine doses equivalent to three large cups of coffee could help Alzheimer’s disease. The research was carried out at the University of Florida.

Mice with symptoms of dementia were divided into two groups. One group received coffee equivalent to six shots of espresso, the other had water instead. After two months those receiving the coffee performed significantly better in memory and thinking tests.

Obviously this requires more resesrach; but an interesting result.

Honey & Maggots for MRSA

A hospital in Bath, the Royal United Hospital, is using Manuka honey and maggots to treat wounds, especially leg ulcers, and even those affected with MRSA.

The Manuka honey has an action which actively draws fluid from the wound so helping it to heal, and remove dead tissue.The maggots can have a similar effect. Those of the common greenbottle are used.

After a course of this treatment, one patient said: “I’m able to sleep without sleeping tablets and for the first time new skin is forming over my ulcer.”

This treatment is most unconventional, but is minimally invasive and drug-free. Let’s hope the idea spreads.

NHS Errors Rise

The latest UK National Health Service (NHS) figures show that 86,000 errors were made in medication in a year in England and Wales.

Examples include patients being given a seditive instead of insulin and a patient being given 100mg of morphine instead of 10ml.

A senior NHS pharmacist said that it was ‘well known’ that such errors were underreported by a factor of 10, implying that in reality the error rate was near to 1 million a year.

Out of the 86,000 reported errors, nearly 3,000 resulted in death or a stay in hospital.

The moral as always – only go into hospital if you really have to. Hospitals are great when you really need them; but doctors and nurses are only human, and mistakes will happen.

Whole Foods – Optimistic

Whole Foods Market have a massive presence in the USA market. I was recently in Denver and one of their stores – packed with healthy food of every imaginable type – was the size of Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s.

The Denver area has seven of these! So much for ‘unhealthy Americans’.

They opened a store in Kensington, central London, and the profits have not been great. They are sticking at it, though. And they have re-branded the four Fresh & Wild London stores – which they own as Whole Foods.

They have moved in new management staff to try and achieve more footfall in the Kensington shop. Let’s hope they succeed.

We could certainly do with more shops in the UK like Whole Foods Market. But then we do need more people in the UK to spend more on healthy food.

Question: Would you spend 20% more on your food bill if the quality and choice was excellent, and additives and chemicals at an absolute minimum?

Government ‘Obesity Camps’

‘Obesity Camps’ are to be paid for by the UK governnment after new guidace has been sent to Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). This is with immediate effect.

The options which PCTs can offer range from 12 week weight loss courses to six-week residential courses.

Paediatricians have said that the obesity crisis facing Britain is so great that drastic action was necessary.

Nottingham PCT already offers a 12-week “Go 4 It” course, on which children and their parents attend twice-weekly fitness and nutrition classes.

Some action groups said that it was outrageous to single out overweight kids with a worrying letter, and that it could lead to bullying.

But surely they are probably being bullied already?

Some sort of action is necessary, followed by careful assessment of what is working to establish best practice.
