Drug Companies Pay for ‘Fake’ Journal

August 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment

It seems quite likely that pharmaceutical companies are behind some news agencies which release news stories favourable to them without revealing their connections. This would certainly explain some of the alternative medicine ‘bad news stories’ which hit the press periodically, peppered with a few carefully chosen facts, but contains express or implied untruths which tarnish the alternative health industry.

One such case has come to light.

A court in Australia has heard how the drug company Merck paid for a supposedly independent medical journal which give favourable reviews to its own products. One such case has come to light.

Merck paid publisher Elsevier to publish eight pieces praising its drug Vioxx in a way which appeared as if the work reported had been independently peer-reviewed.

Elsevier acknowledged that the articles should have disclosed that they had received payment from Merck.

Of course, Merck are just doing what they need to sell product.

However you wonder how much other biased information doctors read through and accept without questioning it.
