As few as two fizzy drinks or glasses of fruit juice a day can increase the chance of liver damage developing.
I have previously highlighted the danger of over-consumption both of fizzy drink and fruit juices.
The recent research reveals that drinking a litre of either fruit juice or soda in a day increases the chance of developing fatty liver disease by five times. This disease is similar to that suffered by those who abuse alcohol. The study, carried out at the Ziv Liver Unit in Haifa, also found increased levels of heart disease and diabetes.
The component causing the problem is identified as fructose – fruit sugar. This is very easily absorbed by the liver and so affects it more quickly.
Parents are advised to put water in their kids’ lunch boxes rather than soda – or even rather than that fruit juice which we all thought was so healthy.
