A green tomato, christened the Kumato, has appeared in UK shops. The Kumato can be eaten either green, late in its life when it is brown, or when fully ripe and deep brown/red.
OK – so it looks unappetising; but it tastes better than it looks (that’s a guess
).
The Kumato is a wild tomato which has been selectively crossed with domesticated tomatoes. The wild, green relative has been eaten in Europe for many years. Up until now – it was thought that the British were not ready for it; now we are judged to be ready!
This fruit is not the result of any genetic engineering – it is completely naturally produced.
It Contains Lycopene – Healthy Antioxidant
The Kumato is on sale in Marks and Spencer food shops, and will be available all year. It is high in healthy lycopene – as are normal tomatoes. Lycopene is a powerful anti-oxidant thought to reduce cancer and heart disease.

I am a tomato-holic, but I have never actually had a green tomato. I wonder if there is any place in the United States that sells Kumato’s (cool name BTW
)

Hi Jacob – they have come to the UK from Europe, so not yet, I’m afraid. Maybe next year…. Here’s some more info:
Cheers

Neat, I checked out their growing section and it looks like they would probably grow in my climate. I might have to try to contact them and see if they sell seeds to individual growers, although from looking at their site, I get the feeling they want to deal with large scale farmers…

Hi again Jacob. I am sure they would grow in your climate. Good news – I have found a supplier in the UK. Check out: http://www.seedfest.co.uk/seeds/tomatoes/black/black.html .
They have been supplying what they call ‘Black tomatoes’ since 2001, and they ship to USA for £1.50 ($2 or so) for as many packs as you like! They have six varieties! Let me know how they taste.
All the best, M

Wow they look really cool, I wonder what supermarkets will be selling them. I’m not sure if I will be able to convince the kids to eat them, let alone my husband.
