Hay fever is currently estimated to cost the country £7bn a year due to lost productivity. It currently affects 16m people in the UK.
The cost will increase considerably if hay fever continues to increase at its current rate. It is predicted that it will increase to affect as many as one third of the Uk population by 2040.
Twice as many people now suffer from hay fever as 20 years ago. The blame is put partly on more sterile conditions of living which can insulate chldren from exposure to the allergens which they can then develop immunity to early.
