Heart Muscle Repair a Step Closer

March 7th, 2009 · No Comments

heart-1-200px Various tissues have been grown in the lab and then transplanted into patients. For example, one recent success story was about a woman who had successfully been given a replacement  windpipe regrown with her own stem cells on a donor’s cartilage matrix.

With the heart the problem with repairing it in a similar way has been – getting the right sort of matrix for the cells to grow on.

Heart Muscle is Special

For the heart to beat properly the matrix has to make the cells align in the right way. Now, the challenge of how to do that has been solved by designing a new shape of matrix. Using a structure which looks like a honeycomb the cells line up perfectly well.

Future Heart Treatment

This means that in the future, a person’s heart will be patched up with a piece of heart tissue in a similar way to mending a bicycle puncture.

One of the symptoms of a coronary heart attack, for example, is a heart ‘infarction’, where blood is withheld from part of the heart wall and tissue dies.

Using this method this tissue could be replaced, strengthening the heart considerably. This would improve heart function and reduce the chance of another heart attack as well as any other heart symptoms.
