For general health, the liver is a vital organ to look after. This is sometimes called liver cleansing.
Do read our article about liver health and liver cleansing. We also review some of our herbal options for helping the liver stay functioning well.
The liver is our major detox organ. It filters toxins out of the blood, directly eliminating some of them – through the bowel - and splitting the others up into pieces and then eliminating these – mainly through the kidneys.
Supporting and cleansing the liver will help it to keep performing detox – just one of its important functions.
Other vital liver functions include: storing fat-soluble vitamins, storing sugar reserves and releasing them on demand, producing bile – which digests fats, and removing unneeded hormones from the system.
Herbs and the Liver
Herbs can act to support the liver very well. You have probably heard of Milk Thistle. This is a great liver herb which is known among herbalists for its benefits for the liver in general as well as its safe use by nearly anyone.
Here is an article on the SHS site with further information about the liver and liver cleansing. There are some additional herbs you can use to help the liver with its detox and other functions.
