UK surgical operations to assist weight loss have increased in a year from just under 3,000 to nearly 4,500. People who are obese and are concerned about it often use a surgical procedure as a last resort to help them lose weight.
The operations either staple the stomach to make it smaller or bypass it altogether. Four fifths of those having the operations are women.
Both operations make the stomach smaller so that less food can be eaten at a sitting.
