A report commissioned by the (UK) Food Standards Agency have concluded that [tag-tec]organic food[/tag-tec] is "no healthier" for you than non-organic. Well, tosh of course.

A report commissioned by the (UK) Food Standards Agency have concluded that organic food is “no healthier” for you than non-organic.

Well, tosh of course.

It depends on what you define as health, I suppose. The report even agrees that organic food has more nutrients than non-organic – they just say that’s not really important.

The report states that organic food has: 12.7% more protein, 53% more beta-carotene (vitamin A), 38% more flavonoids (anti-oxidants), and higher percentages of various important minerals.

So, how can it be said that:

“..it is therefore unlikely that these differences in nutrient content are relevant to consumer health”.

Are they ‘avin’ a larff? Are they completely bonkers? No – they are just nutty scientists.

Fertilizers

No mention in this report is made of the fact that farming with chemicals has impoverished our land and polluted our rivers and seas – something organic farming hugely reduces or eliminates. “Outside the terms of the report,” no doubt.

Keep At The Organic Food

So, keep eating organic. At least it’s cheaper now than it was a few years ago.

And try to keep in touch with folk with allotments – it’s time for gluts of produce to appear, and allotment holders are usually generous with presents.

Question: Are you eating more or less organic food? Are you affected by the credit crunch? Have you taken on an allotment? Answer in the comments.
