Organic Health Food Hit

by malc on March 5, 2009

Whole-Foods-market-LondonWe all know that organic health food is an important part of a healthy diet. And if you are on a detox diet, organic is highly desirable. And even day-to-day, we should reduce the additives in food that we eat. This act alone can stop the development of some nasty diseases.

And if you put fewer chemicals into your body – that detox becomes less necessary!

Organic? Too Expensive Now

Some bad news for organic food – London’s biggest organic supermarket has seen it’s sales fall dramatically because of the shortage of cash out there.

Whole Foods Market in Kensington, London opened in June 2008 hoping to see their market increase rapidly. However, sales of their organic foods have not reached anything near what they hoped for. US Parent company, Fresh and Wild, lost nearly £10m in the year to September 2009, helped by a chunky loss from the Kensington store.

Whole Foods Market invested plenty of money to try to hit their targets. In fact, they spent huge amounts. They employ 500 staff, which includes 55 chefs.

Natalie Berg, Planet Retail commented:

"It’s an expensive store in an expensive part of town…. "

Neil Saunders, of retail analyst Verdict said:

"The economics of that store in Kensington just don’t stack up."

Really bad timing for the company. In better times organic health foods would have had a better chance; but now, the Kensington wealthy are reducing spending just like the rest of the country. The well-heeled locals are trading down from organic food to non-organic. Probably off to Tesco Express…

Maybe they’ll delay their detox diet – or carry it out with non-organic food (tut tut).

The only reason our great grand parents were able to maintain good health even in old age is that they ate organic food.
