A new meta-study (a study of studies) has concluded that sunbeds are ‘carcinogenic to humans’. This upgrades them from the previous classification as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said that sunbeds were more dangerous than previously thought, and are particularly dangerous for those under 30. The report was published in the Lancet Oncology journal.
Like the cigarette firms before them, the Sunbed Association said there was ‘no proof’ that sunbeds caused cancer.
But there is now no doubt – don’t use sunbeds!
As well as causing the most virulent type of skin cancer, sunbeds are also thought to make melanoma (cancer) of the eye more likely.
