A new law in the UK permits human frozen eggs – usually frozen prior to cervical cancer treatment – to be stored for 50 years.
However, the law is retrospective only to 2004; eggs frozen before this time were only permitted to be stored for five years.
Many couples who had eggs frozen in 2003 or before face having their viable eggs destroyed - and denying them the chance of parenthood.
Representations are being made to government to avoid this unplanned penalty on women who had their eggs frozen too early. Hopefully common sense will prevail and the new law will be changed.
